Strategy — habits that climb the ladder

Cosmillion strategy: score higher, practice honestly

The scoring ladder rewards one instinct: guessing what others won't. That instinct is trainable. Below are the habits we've found move answers up the official tiers, and an honest look at ways to practice more than once a day.

Generate candidates before you commit

The 25-second window rewards a two-phase habit: burn the first five seconds listing two or three candidate answers in your head, then type the rarest one you believe is valid. Players who type the first idea that arrives are the ones filling the Tourist and Overthought bands — the clock punishes one-idea thinking more than slow typing.

Reach for the second-famous pick

Within any category there's a fame gradient: the headline answer everyone types, a small cluster of well-known runners-up, and a long tail of legitimate but quieter options. The reliable move is picking from the edge of the well-known cluster — real, valid, easy to defend, yet far enough from the headline that the crowd thins out. That's the difference between a Cadet and an Astronaut.

Distrust the answer you're proud of

The Overthought band exists because clever-feeling answers are often collectively reached: if your pick impressed you, it may have impressed a few thousand other players at the same moment. Use the friend test from our scoring guide — if a well-read friend would likely guess it within a minute, push one step further out before submitting.

Respect the clock, use the leniency

Don't lose points to perfectionism: the game's matching accepts plurals, variants and accented spellings, and a near-miss triggers a confirmation rather than a silent reject — so a slightly unsure spelling is still worth submitting before the buzzer. What the game won't do is accept an answer that doesn't satisfy the prompt, so spend your remaining seconds on validity, not typography.

Ways to practice more than once a day

One launch a day is the official rhythm, and there are exactly three honest ways to get more reps. We list all three because one of them is ours — and we'd rather show you the whole picture than pretend otherwise.
