How a round works
Read the fragment
Each day deals 7 undated moments from history — a launch, a battle, a charter, a discovery. You get 25 seconds per moment.
Set your year
Type a year or drag the dial. Editing never moves the ship, so you can change your answer without the scene giving it a life of its own.
GO, then see the truth
GO sends the ship to your chosen year and keeps it there. The true moment, the year gap and your score unfold alongside your guess.
Scoring
A guess is graded by how far it lands from the true year. Older moments allow more tolerance: a miss of twenty years is close on an ancient event and nowhere near on a modern one.
The six eras
The run starts at today and travels back to 1 AD. Each era changes the light, landmarks and scoring tolerance; the year you enter always remains an exact calendar year.
- Digital Age1950–today
- Modern Times1900–1950
- Machine Age1700–1900

Frequently asked
Is Year Drill free?
Yes. The daily run and unlimited practice are both free, with no account and no paywall.
How is the score calculated?
Every guess is graded by distance from the true year: exact 100, close 85, near 60, rough 30, anything further 10. A blank or a timeout scores nothing. Seven perfect moments is 700.
Why do older events get more room for error?
Being twenty years out on the First Crusade is a good guess; being twenty years out on the first Moon landing is not. Tolerance widens with the age of the event, so precision is judged relative to how precisely anyone could know the date.
Does the ship move while I type?
No. Typing and dragging the dial only edit your answer. The ship stays on course until you press GO, then visits your guess before revealing the true year.
Is everyone flying the same run?
Yes. The daily board is seeded by the date alone, so every player gets the same seven moments on the same day. One attempt per day; practice rounds never touch your daily streak.
Where do the moments come from?
Event dates are cross-referenced against Wikidata (CC0) and written up from public historical records. The wording of every fragment is our own.
Is this the official eraly.io game?
No. Year Drill is an original game built on two-minute-drill.com. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to eraly.io; the daily year-guessing format is aligned, and every word, look, and question here is our own.
